Pre-project planning: technology workshop
Student success is based on their understanding of the use of the Web 2.0 tools and platforms incorporated in the project and therefore it is important that the teacher scaffold and mimic the use of such tools and platforms. Students should be given the opportunity to go through the various stages, using the technology, in order to create a practice vidcast so that they have had the opportunity to learn and complete a finished product before starting the actual project (Green, Inan, & Maushak, 2014; Lee, 2009).
Scaffolding is an extremely important throughout each step of the process. This will insure student’s understand and are able to successfully produce a storyboard, a script, and finally a vidcast. The teacher will need to demonstrate for the whole class using the Smartboard how to illustrate within the boxes and how to use concise sentences and phrases when writing a storyboard. The teacher could use one of the group’s storyboards in order to demonstrate how to turn it into a working script. And in fact, this may need to be done several times. Lastly, and possibly the most demanding of patience, is the process of walking the students through the use of GarageBand – recording audio, editing it and turning it into an MP3 file and saving it to their user file – and iMovie – uploading the MP3 file and adding images. Finally will be the process of uploading the vidcast file to Edmodo.
The practice vidcast will be taken advantage of as a way to formally introduce the students to their overseas counterparts. In a one minute video, the students will show the things that define them, such as pictures of their community, their school and playground, their family, hobbies, teams they play on, shows they watch, food they eat, etc.
